Snow Surface Terminology * These definitions are for informational purposes only. The list below contains terms which are most common, but you may occasionally see other reported types of snow not listed below. Packed Powder - very dry natural or man-made compacted snow that is no more than 12 hours old Packed Snow - packed surface of natural or man-made snow that has not been through a thaw-freeze cycle Groomed Snow - machine groomed man-made or natural snow that has not been subjected to thaw-freeze cycles Groomed Granular - old snow base that has been machine-groomed to provide loose granular surface Loose Granular - old base that is loose and movable Frozen Granular - hard-surfaced granular base that has been frozen after thaw and/or rain Wet Granular - loose or frozen granular snow that has been subjected to warm temperatures and/or rain Spring Skiing (Corn Snow) - old base that has been thawed and re-frozen numerous times by cold nights and warm days so that the surface becomes heavy Fresh Man-Made Snow / Man-Made Snow - varies with weather conditions and the types of snow that can be made. Colder weather can result in dry power while warmer weather can result in a wetter snow. |
